The library is often regarded as the lifeblood of any society, serving as a vital custodian of history for the benefit of present and future generations. In line with this mission, the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun (FUHSI), honoured its benefactor, Chief Bisi Akande, by organising a series of programmes to celebrate his 86th birthday.

Among the highlights of the celebration were a health talk titled “Strategies for Managing Health in a Depressing Economy,” a lecture on “Town and Gown Expectations: The Ila-Orangun Community and FUHSI,” a campus tour, and an exceptional exhibition documenting Baba Akande’s remarkable legacy, curated by the university library.

The library’s exhibition showcased the achievements of Chief Bisi Akande—former Governor of Osun State, former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Asiwaju of Ila-Orangun. The event, held on 15th January 2025, was aptly titled “The Legacy of Baba Bisi Akande at 86” and took place at the university library’s temporary site.

The exhibition featured:

  • Publications authored by Chief Bisi Akande.
  • Books written about him.
  • Speeches delivered on various occasions.
  • Picture frames of Baba Bisi Akande with other dignitaries
  • Large prints of his biography.
  • Flex banners showcasing his portraits.
  • Multimedia displays and documentaries highlighting his biography and contributions to FUHSI and beyond.

The diverse range of exhibits celebrated Baba Akande’s enduring legacy and his invaluable contributions to both the university and the Ila-Orangun community.

The event attracted over 300 participants, including secondary school students, teachers, proprietors, 86th Birthday ceremonial committee members, stakeholders from Ila-Orangun, and members of the university community. The students, in particular, were deeply inspired by the exhibition. Many expressed newfound motivation to pursue education to its highest level, set ambitious life goals, and emulate role models like Baba Akande.

Participants were also given the opportunity to ask questions, which fostered interactive and engaging discussions. The success of the event underscored the importance of exhibitions in educating and inspiring attendees.

The success of the exhibition was largely attributed to the foresight and dedication of the University Librarian, Mrs B. O. Asubiojo, FNLA. A year in advance, she collaborated with Baba Akande’s family to gather publications and other materials, laying a strong foundation for a well-organised and impactful exhibition. Her team worked tirelessly to create an informative, educational, and visually appealing showcase. The exhibition included meticulously curated stands, captivating documentaries, artworks, and publications, all of which highlighted Baba Akande’s remarkable journey and achievements.

The FUHSI library remains committed to organising exhibitions that celebrate important events, personalities, and trends. By doing so, it ensures the delivery of world-class information services and products that keep the university community informed and inspired. As we honour legends like Baba Bisi Akande, we reaffirm the power of education, history, and role models in shaping future generations. The second aspect of Baba Bisi Akande’s birthday celebration was an interfaith gathering held at his residence on Ora Road, Ila-Orangun. The event commenced at 3:00 PM and was well attended by representatives from the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun (FUHSI). Key university officials in attendance included Prof. Monsur Adeleke, Deputy Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Oyeku Oyelami, Provost of the College of Medicine; Mrs B. O. Asubiojo, University Librarian; Dr. Adeoye Oyewole, Guest Speaker; and Prof. Musliudin Owonikoko, Chief Medical Director of the FUHSI Teaching Hospital.
