During the book retreat for August book reviewers, the University Librarian, Mrs. Bukky Asubiojo, warmly welcomed students who participated in the library’s monthly book review in her office. She emphasized that the 21st-century library goes beyond just providing a quiet space for reading. Instead, the FUHSI library model focuses on engaging Gen Z students in their comfort zone, making reading and learning enjoyable and recreational.
To achieve this, the library organizes user-centered activities like movie hangouts, monthly book reviews, and real-time digital reference services via its functional website. The August book review featured the book “Succeed for yourself: unlock the potential for success and happiness by Richard Denny,” with over 19 students participating, mostly female students from various departments and levels. However, only two male students participatants.
The UL noted that the low male participation reflects the attitude of male students towards education and emphasized the need to encourage them to change their narrative, rededicate themselves to reading, learning, leadership, and taking responsibilities early in life.
The August book review retreat concluded with light refreshments, encouragement, photo opportunities, handshakes, and admonitions to make reading a lifelong habit. The UL also seized the opportunity to wish all FUHSI students success in their upcoming exams.
